What is Recognition of Prior Learning?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where learners can be recognised for the work or experience, they have gained in a variety of settings.

Here are just a few:

  • Learners can gain formal credit for their learning for credit transfer or admission to a programme
  • Learners can benchmark their skills, knowledge, and experience to update their CV
  • Learners can reflect upon their experience, from life, work and education and training to build confidence
  • Employers can identify training needs for their employees
  • Employers can recognise learning to map knowledge and skills to jobs within their organisation (SCQF Website ) - 2023

There are three reasons for undertaking the RPL process:

  • RPL for personal/career development (also known as formative recognition)
  • RPL to gain entry to a learning programme
  • RPL for the award of SCQF credit points (also known as summative recognition)

RPL has been known to transform lives in a positive way by enabling people to work towards an award or qualification that can be life changing in terms of their career and development Transforming Lives through Lifelong Learning

Transferable Skills

Transferable Skills are a set of abilities or skills that have often been developed over-time, and can be applied to a wide range of jobs and situations.

These skills are gained anywhere and everywhere - they could be developed from your experience as a parent, carer or guardian or from experiences in your place of work. These skills are important to recognise, as they can open up a world of opportunity and confidence that before, you did not know was available. z

In reviewing your experiences, you may also have qualifications you have undertaken in the past which are very relevant to your future career aspirations.  Have a look at the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework, to see where your qualifications fit and how you can use this in partnership with your other prior learning.
